ABOUT
I’m Laurel Truscott, a freelance landscape architect working across Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Having graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a first-class honours degree in landscape architecture, followed by a graduate diploma from Sheffield University, I have built up over 20 years’ experience as a landscape architect for leading practices across London, Edinburgh and Sydney. I’ve worked across a range of high profile and exciting projects, including design of the parklands and public realm for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Since 2021 I’ve been established as a freelance landscape architect in the North-West of England. Growing up on the doorstep of the Lake District instilled in me a love and profound respect for the wild, but also for the interaction between urban spaces and the natural environment. It’s a privilege to return to this unique area and work within its extraordinary landscapes.
My recent projects include private gardens and estates, hotels, charity facilities and educational spaces but I relish any design challenge that excites me: whether it’s creating a large-scale residential area, rewilding a meadow, or reinvigorating an unloved back garden.
My design ethos is centred upon enhancing the character of the site and bringing to life the clients’ needs and aspirations. Attention to detail and simplicity are key. I believe that the best landscape designs don’t feel imposed on a site but look like they were meant to be there. I always consider the atmosphere and surroundings of a place - how it works, who will use it, and how to make sure we are planting for the future. I love adding unexpected elements to a landscape, creating moments of delight. I’m excited by the growing awareness of the importance of the environment and, in the case of plants, using the right species to provide pleasure and biodiversity.
I’m always open to working together in different ways – whether it’s providing consultation and designs to be implemented by you or your contractors or overseeing the entire process through to planting and maintaining a site.
You can take a look at some of my work here. If you like what you see, and you’d like to discuss a project with me (however large or small) - I’d love you hear from you.
