PRIVATE GARDEN LANCASHIRE

I was thrilled to be asked to design the garden surrounding this beautiful private house in Lancashire, designed by HPA.

Built in the grounds of their existing house, which they have now sold, the clients were keen to make the most of their south-facing garden, to retain the open views across the adjacent fields, and to establish a variety of plants to attract birds, bees and butterflies.

BEFORE & DURING CONSTRUCTION

AFTER

I really enjoyed working with the clients to create a garden with simple, open level spaces for access and entertaining, enclosed with scented evergreen planting providing year-round structure to the loose waves of blue, purple and white herbaceous planting. This, and the gently sloping lawn, is bounded by a wide ribbon of annual and perennial wildflower planting. A raised planting bed with seating encloses the terrace and provides opportunities for gardening at an accessible level. Tree species have been chosen for their seasonal interest and value to wildlife.

The presence of limestone pavement across the site has been challenging (and beautiful in places!) and the areas of planting have been dictated by this in some areas.

This project is still under construction. In Autumn we planted a fabulous mix of Spring bulbs, including Chionodoxas, white scented daffodils, Tulips, Leucojums, and Alliums, and there are additional plants that we are waiting to plant in Spring.
